Be careful what you wish for.

Three days ago I was whining about how unvarying the scenery had been for nearly two weeks. Then two days ago things started to change dramatically, with a steep several-thousand-foot descent that my legs are still feeling.

Today I had an uphill climb that was every bit as steep as Wednesday’s, but in the other direction. To make it just a little more interesting, morning rain turned at least a mile of the trail into a slick mud slope as it passed through forest. It was a good day to have hiking poles.

However, once I’d climbed out of the forest, I was treated to amazing vistas of the valley below.

Other than the views, the highlight of the day was crossing into the region of Galicia after what seemed like forever in Castilla y León. This is the region where I’ll end my journey, so it was a reminder that the end is near.
