Just a quick follow-up on our rail journey on Sunday.
Our scheduled route had three connections, one of which, in Nice, was only 12 minutes. As we’d been plagued by late trains all week — even one Swiss train ran two minutes late, for which the conductor naturally apologized — we knew our chances of making the train from Nice to Marseille were iffy, meaning we’d possibly not make it back to Montpellier before the trains stopped running Sunday evening.
It turned out our train from Milan to Ventimiglia arrived right on schedule, and an earlier train to Nice was just about to depart on the adjacent track. This widened our margin of safety in Nice, and even gave us a chance to step outside the station when we got there.
Bottom line: We were back in Montpellier at our scheduled 8:24 pm arrival time, and safely back to our apartment a few minutes later.
